Exit the Kettlebell
No i am not giving up on kettlebells but I just finished a 3 week cycle of the ETK program. I worked up to 4 rung ladders of presses with 40kg which I am happy with. My previous best was a double with the 40. Don't get me wrong. it is a great program but it breaks down eventually when you get up into higher weights. 40 kg clean & press ladders put a lot of wear and tear on my shoulders and I started to get that nagging subscapularis and infraspinatus ache that I used to get from lots of pressing. A few weeks of this was ideal though. I did manage to set a new PR as I was able to press my 45kg bell and nearly got the 48 but not quite. I still think I can get it but it is going to have to be a lower volume approach. Perhaps a "grease the groove" approach with multiple 40kg presses scattered throughout the day is called for. In addition we are back in the saddle with some GS stuff with long cycle, snatches and jerks (did all three today) and running. I am also doing pistols, getups, chins, rings, grip work and whatever else I feel like doing. I'll let August finish before deciding what's next (still have to nail that 48!). On the other hand grip training is going nowhere. Oh, by the way I got a new coach and he has no tolerence for slackers.
Here is some footage of yesterday's trainings.

Just wondering what your secretary thinks when weird grunts and thuds of heavy objects are heard emanating from your office when you start peppering your workday with presses?
Also, I'm shocked that the new coach continues to sport a distinctly un-militant haircut. I thought all you kettlebellers were high and tight kinda guys. This one must be a rebel indeed.

He has my genetics, follicular attrition is surely in his future. My office is isolated, deep in a glacier.
Tell Jonny congrats on the new job! I bet they don't serve saline gatorade there.

Good stuff, Scott. I seemed to have the same problem when I worked my way up to the heavier 'bells w/the ETK program. It did pack on lots of mass for me at the time, though...
Just curious, when you started training for your LC MS, what kind of weight/volume were you doing?
Thanks,
Wil

Wil:
Thanks. I started working towards long cycle with the 24s and then I progressed to 32s after I could go ten minutes with the 24s. Once I was at the 32s I would typically do maybe a 5-7 min set with those and a 3-4 min set or two with lighter bells at a faster pace. Then I would also do a heavier set of one arm jerks. 40-48kg. And then I would run.
Thanks.
